According to the Migration Strategy released on 11 December 2023, a new ‘Skills in Demand’ visa program will replace the old Temporary Skill Shortage(482) visa. If you're seeking a pathway to migrate to Australia via an employer-sponsored visa or to obtain a working visa, understanding these new changes is crucial for preparing in advance for your future application.
3 Pathways to Suit Different Skills
The Skills in Demand visa offers three different pathways to cater to different types of skilled workers:
Specialist Skills Pathway: This pathway is for highly skilled workers who can help boost Australia's productivity. It's open to people earning at least AUD 135,000 a year in almost any profession (No occupation list) except for trades, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers. The processing time for this pathway is only 7 days.
Core Skills Pathway: This pathway is for workers with skills that are in high demand in Australia. If your job is on the Core Skills Occupation list (to be determined by government employment body - Jobs and Skills Australia) and you earn at least AUD 70,000 a year, you could qualify.
Essential Skills Pathway: This pathway is still being worked on, but it will be for workers earning under AUD 70,000 a year in essential skill occupations. Workers under this pathway are currently sponsored through labour agreements (only aged care and disability has been mentioned so far).
What Makes This Visa Special?
Here are some key features of the Skills in Demand visa:
Longer Stay: You can stay in Australia for up to 4 years on this visa, giving you plenty of time to settle in and contribute.
Faster Processing: The government aims to process visa applications in just 21 days on average (7 days for Specialist Skills Pathway), making the process quicker and smoother.
Transparent Sponsor Register: There will be a public register of approved sponsors, so you can easily find employers who are looking for skilled workers like you. This will also facilitate switching employers. Currently, employers have to go through at least the nomination application process again in order to "take over" a sponsorship.
More Job Security: If you lose your job or change your employer, you have 180 days to find a new sponsor(currently 60 days for 482 visa), giving you more time to secure your future in Australia.
Pathway to Permanent Residency: All 3 pathways give you a clear pathway to apply for permanent residency.
Less Upfront Cost for Employers: The government is looking into spreading out the costs for employers(SAF levy), making it easier for them to sponsor skilled workers.
Easier Labour Market Testing: Workforce Australia will no longer be a mandatory platform for LMT advertising. Validity of the ads will increase from 4 to 6 months.
In Summary
Australia's new Skills in Demand visa is all about making it easier for skilled workers to come and make a positive contribution to the country. With simpler pathways, faster processing, and more job security, this visa opens up exciting opportunities for both workers and employers.
